Today, I had the pleasure of welcoming a guest from Russia to my koto experience class in Asakusa.
They discovered the koto through YouTube and became interested in learning it! Since they requested to play “Sakura,” I prepared a plan that included the sheet music, a brief history of the song, and an original piece incorporating traditional koto techniques to complete at the end of the session.
“Sakura” is a perfect song for beginners, as it beautifully represents Japan’s spring and the iconic cherry blossoms. Although this was their first time experiencing the instrument, they skillfully played in ensemble, which made me so happy to witness.
I hope this experience becomes a cherished memory from their time in Japan.
Through the koto experience, the opportunity to connect beyond borders and cultures is incredibly valuable for me as well. It reaffirmed my desire to share the charm of the koto with more people who are interested in Japanese music and culture.
